Details of the AFB Music Director Position

Job Duties

•Work with the Board to plan and undertake the performance schedule of the concert and marching bands.

•Coordinate the musical development of the concert and marching bands by selecting repertoire, scheduling performances, and improving the musical caliber of the group.

•Show sensitivity to the diverse levels of musicianship in the group and willingness to offer encouragement to individual members to grow musically.

•Assist with the organization’s mission to represent and promote a positive image for Atlanta’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and allies community.

•Respect the organization’s value of diversity in people and in music, making repertoire choices that reflect the diversity of the band.

•Make decisions concerning the personnel roster for performances in accordance with the organization’s attendance policy and musical goals.

•Assign parts and solos to band members and choose section leaders.

•Conduct performances of the concert and marching bands. Note: AFB can provide the assistance of a Drum Major during marching season, if desired. The Drum Major can assist with directing the group during marching and outdoor performances, developing and teaching marching drills and techniques, and coordinate with the auxiliary flag and baton units.

•May work with an Assistant Director, if appointed by the AFB board.

•Encouraged to attend official functions (i.e. fundraisers, socials, etc.) of the concert and marching bands.

•Serve as an ex-officio member of the AFB Board of Directors and attend meetings.

•Assist the Board in directing the growth and continuity of the concert and marching bands, includes recruitment and retention of members.

•Develop relationships with other community music leaders and educators.

•Coordinate with the Artistic Committee to develop the artistic vision for the concert and marching bands.

Requirements

•Professional musical experience, a music degree, or a significant, demonstrated musical talent.

•Experience with preparing and conducting concert and marching bands.

•Extensive knowledge of repertoire for concert and marching bands.

•Talent for developing innovative musical programming that attracts audiences and provides a meaningful experience for the players.

•Experience with training and with development of a music group.

•Strong interpersonal skills, recognizing that selflessness, teamwork and collegiality dictate the success of a group.
