Hao-An Henry Cheng

Hao-An Henry Cheng began studying piano under the guidance of Dr. Jui-Wen Chen at age 14. He is currently finishing his undergraduate degree in Piano Performance at The Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He is a recipient of the Howard Hanson Scholarship, The George Eastman Grant and The Professional Chamber Music Grant from the Eastman School of Music. Other distinctions include top prizes at the Georgia Music Teacher Association Competition, the Atlanta Jewish Community Center’s Young Musicians Competition and The Eastman Honors Chamber Society Award. He has performed solo and chamber concerts at Spivey Hall, Rialto Hall, The George Eastman House, The Eastman Theatre, Kilbourn Hall and at concert venues in Rome, Venice, Florence and Milan, Italy.
Henry studied conducting at Eastman with Maestro’s Mark Scatterday, Brad Lubman and Neil Varon. He formed and conducted the Eastman Student Orchestra, where he had the opportunity to conduct the world premiere of composer Zachary Wadsworth’s “Dirge.” In addition Henry conducted the Eastman Graduate Orchestra, and the Eastman Symphonic Symphony Orchestra.
In the summer of 2004, Henry founded the Momentum Summer Music Festival for youths in Atlanta Georgia. This intensive 10 day program included piano instruction in music theory and history and culminated in a gala performance of the attendees.
In addition to being the Music Director of the Atlanta Freedom bands, Henry is the Assistant Conductor of the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra and is a private student of conducting with Maestro Michael Palmer at Georgia State University. Henry is also a well-regarded private instructor of piano and music theory.
