Dr. Patrick Carney - Music Director ![]() Concurrently, Dr. Carney has earned the position of Music Director and Conductor of the award-winning Atlanta Wind Symphony. The Atlanta Wind Symphony, formerly the North Fulton Community Band, is a musical outlet for adult musicians ranging in experience from some of Atlanta’s finest professional musicians and composers to hobbyists. Dr. Carney is a faculty member of the INTERASIA Conductors’ Symposia founded by esteemed colleague and friend, Professor Shuichi Komiyama. In 2007, Dr. Carney taught and lectured to various music educators from Singapore, Thailand, and China in beautiful Singapore. In the same summer of 2007, he was also invited to be a lecturer-in-residence at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music in Hanoi, Vietnam. He worked with students and professionals of the conservatory, and lectured on “Wind Band practices” to members of the Hanoi Conservatory Orchestra and the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra. He has over 12 years of university experience, both with athletic and wind bands, with programs at Florida State, Syracuse, Charleston Southern, Oregon, Montana State, and Clayton State University. Dr. Carney has directed and administered athletic bands at Big Sky, Big South, PAC-10, Big East, and Atlantic Coast conference events including the Holiday, Orange, Sugar, and Fiesta Bowls. He has conducted wind bands in California, Florida, Georgia, Montana, New York, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, and Virginia. Prior to his current position, Dr. Carney was the Director of Bands at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. Preceding MSU, he was a member of the faculty at the University of Oregon and Charleston Southern University. He taught public school in Ohio at North Olmsted Middle and High Schools. While at The Florida State University, he studied music education research with Dr. Clifford Madsen, Dr. John Geringer, and Dr. Alice-Ann Darrow. His publications have appeared in Research Perspectives in Music Education, Florida Music Director, The Instrumentalist, and the Missouri Journal of Research in Music Education. Dr. Carney has presented research efforts at conferences for CBDNA, NBA, MENC, and the Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA). Most recently, he accepted invitations to present at the 2010 Georgia Music Educators Association In-service Conference in Savannah (January) and the 2010 CBDNA & NBA Southern Division Conference in Oxford, MS (February). Dr. Carney is a member of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) and the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) including the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA). For GMEA, he serves as the College Chair of District 6 and organizer of the 2010 All-College Band. He served as the Co-Governor of the Western District of Kappa Kappa Psi during the 2005-2006 academic year, and Co-Governor of the Midwest District during the 2006-2007 academic year. He is an honorary of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma, and a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Dr. Carney has earned a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music Theory from The Florida State University, a Master of Music Education from Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. in Music Education from The Florida State University. He is a native of Winter Haven, Florida where his parents still reside. He currently lives in Stockbridge, Georgia. ![]() |
